Frequently Asked Questions
Your first session
Do I need to prepare anything before the first session?
No preparation is needed at all. You’re welcome just as you are. Some people come with a clear idea of what they want to talk about, while others just know they need support. There’s no right or wrong way to begin.
What if I don’t know what to say?
That’s absolutely okay. It’s very common to feel unsure of where to start. I’ll gently guide the conversation so we can find our way together. You don’t need to have the words, it’s my job to help you uncover them.
How often will we meet?
Sessions are usually held weekly or fortnightly, depending on your needs and preferences. We can discuss what feels manageable and helpful for you as we go.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is extremely important to me and everything you share is held in strict confidence in line with UKCP professional ethical guidelines. I’ll explain any rare exceptions (e.g. risk of harm) during our first session, so you know exactly where you stand. Please see my confidentiality policy for more details.
Is hypnosis like being asleep or unconscious?
No. Hypnosis is a state of focused relaxation and heightened awareness. You remain fully conscious and in control throughout the session.
Can I be made to do something against my will?
Absolutely not. You cannot be forced to do anything you don’t want to do while under hypnosis.
Will I remember what happens during hypnosis?
Most people remember everything that happens during their sessions but some do not, which is fine.
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes. Hypnotherapy is a safe, natural process when guided by a trained professional.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your goals and the issues you wish to address. We will work together to find the best plan for you.
Can hypnosis help with all problems?
Hypnosis can be very effective for many issues but it’s not a miracle cure. It works best as part of a tailored therapeutic approach suited to your individual needs.
What happens in a psychotherapy session?
In a safe, confidential space, we’ll talk about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Together, we’ll explore what’s important to you and work toward understanding and change.
How long does psychotherapy take?
The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and needs. Some people find relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support.
Is psychotherapy only for people with serious problems?
No. Psychotherapy is for anyone who wants to understand themselves better, improve their wellbeing or navigate life’s challenges more effectively.
Is what I share confidential?
Absolutely. Confidentiality is a core part of psychotherapy, with very few legal exceptions that would be explained to you upfront. Please follow the link to my confidentiality policy for more details.
Will I be given advice or told what to do?
Therapy is collaborative. I don’t tell you what to do, but together we explore options and develop strategies that work for you.
